Township Tour

A trip to Durban is not complete without venturing into one of the many surrounding townships. The heritage enriched area of Inanada and Kwa Mashu provides a true taste of township life. This area once accommodated  some of South Africa's finest thinkers, including Mahatma Gandhi, Dr JL Dube and Isiah Shembe. Witness the historic Ohlange School, where Nelson Mandela cast the first democratic vote. This is followed by a stop at the birthplace of the Shembe Church. By this time the rumble of the stomach needs to be answered, so we venture to the local hangout of Hlabisa Tavern, and indulge on 'Shisanyama' (traditional style food). Time here is spent mingling with the locals, from CEO's to truck drivers, friendships found here last a lifetime. Next we drop by the Kwa Mashu train station and market, before visiting some friends and families homes, for an authentic view into humble living. We return to where our journey began, culturaly awakened and hearts golden aglow.
